Depending on how fit you are you can do the trip in less than 4 hours. We have done the tour several time and prefer it over taking the more commercial Li River Cruise. A second thing you should mention is that in dry season the tourist boats cannot go the whole way from Guilin to Yangshuo. If you want to do so, you probably have to rent a much smaller bamboo raft.
