November 11 is a peculiar holiday for single people in China. It is said this Singles’ Day originated form campus culture in early 1990s, when some collegers in Nanjing came into their minds that selecting the day of four consecutive “ones” as the memorial day for the four roommates. It then became prevalent especially among those singles.
In this day, many youths like to hold parties or hang out for bars to enjoy themselves in twos and threes. Karaoke becomes an attractive rendezvous. The “love song for singles” by the singer Lin Zhixuan is said to be the most popularly singing song. Likewise, male students in college gather to sing or yell songs toward the girls’ dormitory. The percussive instruments that accompany their singing are largely made up of spoons and rice bowls.
Assemblies for people are not only the way for commemorating single life, nor just being a celebration. Rather, many packages launched on the day have provided opportunities for city residents to make friends and leave behind their loneliness. As a matter of fact, some people even like to choose the special day for their marriage, as they believe the day will connect the singles together forever.
Modern ideas make it no longer a taboo to be single in China, especially in big metropolises. People become tolerant to different point of views and some do not agree to draw an equal sign between bachelordom and loneliness, solitude or boredom, as they think singleness brings more independence, more freedom and unrestrained planning of life. However, there is a tendency which is now turning to a concern that the birth rate of boys has outrided than that of girls for those years. In the near future of China, millions of male will face the embarrassing situation that they have no choice but to be single.
